Freedom is a familiar concept in these United States. However, we also debate exactly what it means, who gets it, and when it doesn’t apply. The apostle Paul wrote a letter to the church in Galatia two millennia ago addressing the same topic. He believed freedom was less about following the rules to get a particular badge of faith, and more about pursuing life with the Spirit. In other words, it wasn’t so much about following a list of “do’s and don’ts” as it was about remaining with God, pursuing a friendship with Him, and watching the fruit of that grow. Letting that relationship shape our thoughts and actions was true, life-giving freedom for Paul and remains an invitation for us today.
When we talk about “growing what is good”, we are not just talking about growing something outside of ourselves. We are talking about growing…us. We are originally good, supremely good, according to Genesis 1. Jesus comes to Earth to take on what has destroyed us and restore us to our original goodness. He is the first of the New Humanity in the New Creation. He calls us to become part of the New Humanity in the New Creation.
