Essentially every moment with Jesus was surprising. Oftentimes the surprise was good–especially for people who had little hope or reason to have a lot of faith. Sometimes the surprise was unsettling or confusing. But always Jesus was showing the world a beautiful new world he was starting with a new future and a new humanity. Jesus was like the firstborn in this new future with a new kind of human. Jesus himself was this new kind of human that left people stunned–and yet he was also something ancient, a picture of how it was always supposed to be. That’s why he came to free us from the forces of sin and evil and death and make a way for us to become part of this New Humanity in the New Creation. He gives us the opportunity to turn our lives around and to grow what is good and glorious for us, for God and for all people.

We are originally good, supremely good, according to Genesis 1. Jesus comes to Earth to take on what has destroyed us and restore us to our original goodness. He is the first of the New Humanity in the New Creation. He calls us to become part of the New Humanity in the New Creation.
